NYC Water Security Initiatives for Risk Management and Application to other Infrastructure Programs

The purpose of the seminar is two-fold:

1. Present advances in environmental science and public health, and their application to our well-being -- while promoting interaction across disciplines.

2. Offer a glance for students of all ages into career and investment possibilities -- insights into opportunities that nest at the intersections of environment, public health, and economics.

The seminar is FREE ; advance registration is required


Date and time: Feb 11, 2010, 5-7 pm
Reception/networking: 7:15-8 pm

Doing it for the FIRST TIME, again
FIRST TIMES are vested with Special Energy -- to Seize the Moment
Remember your First Times? And those of others?
[Hint: Felt Alive, fully in the moment, there was nothing else!]
Examples: ?
We are always doing everything for the First Time – though not aware of it.
Cannot step into the same river twice!
How can we feel like the First Time -- again?
By detaching from previous experience, starting with a Clean Slate, like a virgin.

- With your computer, You’d turn it off, pause for a few seconds and turn it on
- In a car, you’d simply push the trip odometer button to clear past trips and start over
- What if we had a “0 Button” that we could click to initialize the mind? [00000]

Mindfulness Practices.
BEGIN Sit upright, shoulders back, hands resting on your lap. Take three deep breaths – relaxing more deeply with each breath.
Scan your surroundings, being aware of your presence HERE in this space.
Now pay attention to your breath as you inhale s l o w l y through the nose, pushing down the diaphragm, deep down to your abdomen. Hold it 4 or 5 seconds. Feel the lungs full all the way to the bottom.
Exhale s l o w l y through the nose. Pause.
Take a second deep breath, hold it 4 or 5 seconds. Exhale slowly, relaxing your body. (Tense up, then relax). Say R E L A X silently with a smile.
Take a third deep breath, relaxing your mind as you exhale slowly. Let go of all thoughts for now. Let body and mind come to rest with a smile.
Now, pay attention to your body. FEEL the weight of your body on the floor or chair.
Feel the gentle TOUCH of your clothes on your skin.
Now shift attention to what is in front
SEE colors… shapes… space. (Simply notice, no comment)
Now, turn your attention to sounds. HEAR the sounds from near… and far. LISTEN to the silence beyond the farthest sound. Take a deep breath. Let go. Let it be. How does it feel to have Mind and Body in the same Time Zone ? Feel free to try this at home.
